Fury erupted last night over cuts that
would take up to 1,000 seats off busy West trains each
day.
The Government wants to
remove rolling stock from the region and send it to areas of
the North and the Midlands. But campaigners in the region
angrily dubbed it The Great Train Robbery and said capacity
must be increased, not slashed.
Among those that would
lose out under the proposals include the Greater Bristol area,
Somerset and Wiltshire.
David Redgewell, the West
spokesman for pressure group Transport 2000, said the move
would have "an absolutely devastating effect" on rail
users.
